Spotlight on

Joe Twist & Katerina Gimon!

Do you like the TV series Bluey? (Tell us if you don’t, because we have questions for you.) Australian composer/arranger Joe Twist is one of the most in-demand music creators in Australia and abroad, straddling film music and concert music arenas – and this acclaimed composer of Bluey tunes has music in the Graphite collection!

On the other side of the Pacific Ocean, Katerina Gimon’s uniquely dynamic, poignant, and eclectic compositional style has earned her a reputation as a distinct voice in contemporary Canadian composition and beyond. Her music has been described as “sheer radiance” (Campbell River Mirror), “imbued…with human emotion” (San Diego Story), and capable of taking listeners on a “fascinating journey of textural discovery” (Ludwig Van).

Hymn of Ancient Lands

Joe Twist
For SATB div, S solo, a cappella
Difficulty: 4 | Duration: 5-10 min.
“Caedmon’s Hymn” is a universal song in which Caedmon, praises God’s creation of Heaven and Earth, which he calls ‘Middengeard’ (Middle-Earth). Extending upon this, “Hymn of Ancient Lands” expresses adoration of land and nature through a ritualistic musical journey which progresses from sparse and plaintive to energetic and joyful. From a modern point of view, “Hymn of Ancient Lands” expresses Australians’ passion for traveling overseas and exploring many different lands, combined with a deep sense of belonging and respect for our own unique and magnificent landscape.

– Joe Twist, 2020

Siren Song

Katerina Gimon
For SSA a capella
Difficulty: 3 | Duration: 3-5 min.
Inspired by the mysterious mythological creature, “Siren Song” is an imagined song sung by a group of sirens to lure in captives and put them under their spell with their ethereal singing. The song begins quite simply and beautifully then gradually transforms until the end of the work when the sirens reveal their true intent. Both the text and music are written by Katerina Gimon.

“My love
Heed my call
You are the only one
You are the lucky one
You are the only one…”

— Katerina Gimon

Weep, O Mine Eyes

Joe Twist

For SSAATTBB a cappella
Difficulty: 4 | Duration: 3-5 min.
In “Weep, O Mine Eyes,” for SSAATTBB, Twist re-imagines the famous 16th-century madrigal settings of the same text. Twist writes a madrigal for the 21st century that is both deeply emotional, but also rhythmically energized and never sentimental. Jazz-like harmonies and several passages of the wordless chorus are seamlessly woven into the contrapuntal texture. Chains of suspensions further evoke the Renaissance roots of the text. Because of the Madrigalian nature of this work, it could be sung one on a part, or with a large group.
