EVANSVILLE, IN — Six girls stand behind podiums waiting for their choir director, Robert Nicholls, to announce the page number for “Hallelujah.” They stand, eyeing the competition, fingers dangling over their closed music books. Each one is ready to fling open the book to be the first one on the right page.
Nicholls says the page number and the six girls, who range in age from 10 to 14, spastically rip through their books, trying to be the first to page 91.
“Here,” says the youngest, Jacqueline Pennington. She’s the first one on the page and her hand shoots up as she proudly displays her victory.
