Singers to Come was commissioned by esteemed Minnesota choral conductor Geneva Eschweiler. It received its premiere in Fergus Falls, Minnesota conducted by Teresa Ashworth. This secular cantata unites four poets–a Romantic, a Victorian, and two contemporary Americans–whose subject is passionate singing. Shelley gives us the origins of song in the sights and sounds of moonlit nature. Galway Kinnell reminds us that “everyone who truly sings is beautiful.” Minnesota-born Richard Eberhart focuses our awareness with driving, concise lines: “be tree and bird.” Alice Meynell looks to the future and exhorts us to pass it on.
