WGBH is thrilled to announce the launch of Sing That Thing! – an 11-episode TV series that will premiere in December on WGBH-2 and WGBX-44, and is inviting New England-based choral groups to get involved!
Sing That Thing! will be a showcase for amateur choruses from Boston and Beyond to compete in a music-performance series hosted by Anthony Trecek-King, director of the Boston Children’s Chorus and the former host of the acclaimed choral program Together In Song on Boston’s WCRB and New York’s WQXR. Each participating group will be invited in to perform before noted judges and a live studio audience. After progressively more challenging rounds, (including learning and performing a newly-commissioned work), we will invite the eight finalists back for a final, live television broadcast from our WGBH studios in February of 2015. Finalists (competing for such awards as performance and recording opportunities) in each of the four categories as well as a series winner will be chosen by our in-studio judges, with input from an online voting audience of viewers at home.
Sing That Thing! isn’t just a music performance competition. We are also looking to tell the stories of people — our friends, co-workers and neighbors — who make these choruses — sing. We want to reveal the passion, dedication, teamwork, and artistic excellence that goes into creating a great choral ensemble. Sing That Thing! will also showcase a deliberately broad spectrum of choral music — from local church choirs, barbershop ensembles and college a cappella groups to high school and adult choruses and more – with the intention of celebrating the joy and accomplishment of sharing song-making with the community.
Not only will the program highlight some of the best amateur choral groups in New England, but WGBH is also intent on providing major promotion and social media sharing for every participating group. More details about the the new program can be found here – and you can see a video about the show here.
WGBH is inviting choral groups to audition for the program and joining our “Super Singing Weekend,” on Sept. 27-28, when we ask no fewer than 60 choirs into our WGBH headquarters in Boston.
The registration form, application rules, judging criteria, and competition rules are on the website singthatthing.wgbh.org. The submission deadline to qualify for the competition is September 15th.
