On Friday, the Renaissance Foundation honored Griffin with a Gospel Heritage Legacy award during its Gospel Heritage Festival at Bethel AME Church in Columbia. Griffin was to be presented the award by Dr. Bobby Jones of Black Entertainment Television’s “Bobby Jones Gospel Hour.”
“I was just really, really excited. I try not to toot my own horn and be low-key, but I was excited,” Griffin said of learning she was going to be honored for her life’s work.
Griffin, who serves as music minister at St. Paul Baptist Church in Orangeburg, said the award means a lot to her because the gospel genre is worthy of preservation. The 64-year-old is the widow of the late Dr. N.L.A. Griffin, founder of Greater Faith Baptist Church in Orangeburg.
