Hello all!
I am currently working on my masters and I am doing some research on multicultural music in the choral classroom. If you are willing to share, why do you think it is important to teach multicultural music to your choir students?
If you are okay with being quoted in my paper, some background info on you would be helpful to give you proper credit!
Thanks!

Hello Hmusic9807,
There are some essays on my website that may interest you.
I am the author of a book on multicultural song leading. (info at website).
All music comes from cultures from Bach to Ewe Praise songs. The reasons most people don’t listen to Bach is not because they don’t like the music. It’s because they don’t like people who like Bach. They don’t associate with the culture of Bach. So when you teach any music, you begin by teaching its culture. That’s a tricky thing to do since our understanding of the cultures of others is clouded by our perception of our own. For example I once interviewed Joseph Shabalala from the group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. I asked him why most of his songs were in the key of F. His answer was, “What is the key of F?” I had used my culture to understand his. It doesn’t work that way.
Anyway, let me know if you have questions about my essays.
Thanks.
