Podium 2012, the big choral event happening in Ottawa this weekend, is the focus of CBC Radio 2’s Choral Concert this May long weekend. Hundreds of choral music lovers – both amateur and professional – have gathered to take in workshops, lectures, concerts, galas and competitions.
But the big highlight of Podium this year is the announcement of the both the $12,000 Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation award for choral conducting, and the national choral awards.
Podium announced the winners yesterday evening at a gala banquet at the Ottawa Conference Centre:
The Sir Ernest Macmillan Foundation Award of $12,000.00 goes this year to New Brunswick native Joel Tranquilla. Congratulations Joel!
The National Choral Awards were given out as follows:
Oustanding Choral Publication: The Well Tempered Listener by Mary Willan Mason.
Oustanding Choral Composition: The Soul of God, by R. Murray Schafer
Oustanding Choral Recording: Parlez Moi, music by Alan Bevan with Concerto Della Donna led by Iwan Edwards
Outstanding Choral Event: The Sealed Angel by Rodion Shchedrin?. Presented by Soundstreams Canada and featuring Toronto’s Elmer Iseler Singers
Oustanding innovative Partnership: Swyrich Corporation
Outstanding Thesis or dissertation: The Passion in Latin America: Examination of three choral movements from Golijov’s La Pasión según San Marcos by Irene Apanovitch
Association of Canadian Choral Communities Choral Composition Competition Award:
Elise Letourneau: Peace Prayer
Distinguished Service Award: Iwan Edwards
