This week’s program is the last in our series on the various parts of the mass. We are going to listen to settings of the Pie Jesu and Lux Aeterna from the Requiem Mass or Mass for the Departed. It being All Saints Day and All Souls Day on November 1 and 2 respectively I thought this might be an appropriate time to schedule these beautiful, very emotional settings of these hopeful texts.
The last 90 minutes of the show will be devoted to Hector Berlioz’ Grande Messe des morts, a masterpiece which he wrote in 1837 to honor the soldiers who had died in the Revolution of 1830. There’s a detailed discussion of the work’s ten movements here: http://www.ugcs.caltech.edu/~jclee/music/requiem_movement.html
Don’t forget to send me suggestions for the 6 hour Christmas Day show I shall be hosting on December 25. Thanks again for your continued support of Great Sacred Music.
