Paula Edwards wins prestigious award

MIDLAND, TX — The choir director of the Robert E. Lee High School has been named as the winner of the Marcia McEntyre Zoffuto Hero Award, which honors outstanding music educators.

Paula Edwards, choir director at Lee High in Midland since 1989, is the 2012 recipient of the award.

“It was quite a surprise,” Edwards said.

Zoffuto, an award-winning band director and daughter of former Permian band director J.R. McEntyre, died from cancer in 2008. Before her death in 2008 Zoffuto was the hero award recipient through the North Texas “Score a Goal in the Classroom” program which later expanded to West Texas and using her name.

“I truly am honored the educators that have been selected – before me are outstanding teachers and musicians and it is an honor to have received the award,” Edwards said. “Marcia McEntyre Zoffuto was a fine director and inspirational musician. To receive an award that is in her honor is quite humbling.”   The award was instituted in 2009 and is presented to a deserving music educator, explained committee member Cindy Bulloch.
