Oklahoma City-Based Choir Names New Artistic Director

Spiritful Voices Community Choir of Oklahoma City has appointed Tom Nix its new artistic director and general manager.

 

In addition to supervising many of the daily activities of the charitable organization, Nix will be responsible for directing the group’s weekly rehearsals and about 16 performances each year throughout central Oklahoma.

 

The 50-voice independent performing arts organization is comprised of singers of varied ages and diverse backgrounds who share a love for music. Rehearsals for the upcoming season will be held every Monday evening, beginning August 15 through December 12, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Francis Tuttle Technology Center, N.W. 128th & N. Rockwell Ave., in Oklahoma City.

 

“I’m very excited to become part of Spiritful Voices,” Nix said. “Our singers are from all walks of life and are dedicated to bringing music into the lives of those in the community. It’s a fun, talented group.”

 

Founded in 1999 by Sam P. Vladovich, the mixed community chorus also features several instrumental musicians. The choir is dedicated to having fun and performing a wide variety of music styles including classical, contemporary, ballads, gospel, sacred, show tunes, patriotic, jazz, seasonal, spiritual, swing, humorous and ethnic pieces.

 

Vladovich will continue to serve the non?profit corporation as its executive director and conductor emeritus.

 

“We are looking forward to having Tom lead our group for many years to come,” said Vladovich. “He is a consummate musician, and we feel certain our choir will continue to grow and benefit greatly from his talent, skills, and musical leadership.”

 

During the past 12 years, Spiritful Voices has performed at such venues as “Opening Night” on New Year’s Eve, the Oklahoma City Festival of the Arts, the Paseo Arts Festival, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, and the Oklahoma State Capitol. Since its inception, the adult choir has also provided free concerts at dozens of retirement communities, convalescent centers, and nursing homes in Edmond, Bethany, Warr Acres, Oklahoma City, and surrounding communities.

 

In 2009, about 40 chorus members and supporters joined hundreds of choir singers from throughout the world on stage at Carnegie Hall in New York to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Shawnee Press, Inc., of Nashville, Tenn.

 

The choir’s new artistic director is no stranger to music or Oklahoma City. Nix attended Oklahoma City University, Southwestern Christian University, and Southern Nazarene University. During the past 45 years, he has played piano for thousands of venues including the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Lyric Theatre, Coles Garden, and Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, as well as for such dignitaries as Pres. Ronald Reagan, Pres. Jimmy Carter, and King Juan Carlos I of Spain.
