The NDSU Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Jo Ann Miller, received the Abbess Cika’s Golden Cross as the 1st place winner in the mixed choir category at the 8th Biannual Zadar International Choral Competition held in Zadar, Croatia on May 19, 2012. Choirs participating in the competition came from Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Poland and the USA.
The choirs presented a 25-minute program including required repertoire from the 16th century or earlier, a comtemporary work, a piece from their native country and a work written by a Croatian composer. The tradition of an organized choral singing has been present in Zadar for more than 120 years, first at the Hrvatski Sokol society and later in the Zoranic Choral Society, founded in 1908.
The NDSU Concert Choir also presented a program in the city square of Zadar and as 1st place winners, sang during the awards ceremony and at Mass in the Catherdral of St. Anastatia.
The competition was a highlight of the European tour to Croatia and Italy for the NDSU Concert Choir.
