Wayland Rogers has published a new piece, “Love is the Light of the World.” Based on an 1890 hymn by George D. Elderkin “Jesus, the Light of the World,” Rogers, has given it new lyrics and a gospel treatment. It was written to commeorate the 50th aniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. The text concerns marching with courgage in the cause of justice. The refrain is “Walk in the light, come where the dew-drops of mercy chine bright. Shine all around us by day and night. Love is the light of the world.” It does not reference any particular religion and may be sung with impunity in secular situations. Audience participation is encourgaged in the refrain.
It is scored for Mixed chorus, piano and medium voice soloist. I’m happy to send a PDF perusal copy. Available for purchase at: http://www.waylandrogers.com
