Alongside the Lied, another popular genre of vocal music in the 19th century was the Romantic part song for chorus. Using texts by many of the same poets who figure so prominently in their Lieder cycles, composers such as Schumann, Schubert, and Brahms composed collections of part songs for various choral forces, women’s, men’s, and mixed. Very often, these same composers treated the Lieder and part song genres interchangeably, producing multiple settings of the same texts for either solo voice or chorus, and structuring their part song collections similarly to their song cycles. Bishop’s arrangements make numerous Lieder, previously available only in solo versions, accessible to choruses, providing educators with the opportunity to make curricular connections between the voice studio, the rehearsal room, and the concert hall.
