NEW SACRED CHORAL WORKS in ENGLISH from Orthodox Music Press

Orthodox Music Press, distributed by Musica Russica, has published 12 new sacred choral works in English. Seven titles are adaptations of works originally composed in Church Slavonic, including works by Pavel Chesnokov, Johann von Gardner, Alexander Kastalsky, Vladimir Martynov, and Alexander Nikolsky. The remaining five titles are by contemporary Orthodox composers currently living and working in the United States:  Nicholas Reeves, Kurt Sander, Richard Toensing, and Nazo Zakkak. Nine of the twelve titles have been recorded by Archangel Voices on their CDs “Orthodox Divine Liturgy: Master, Bless!” and “Panagia: Orthodox Hymns to the Mother of God.”

Although drawn from various ordinaries and propers of the Eastern Orthodox Liturgy, the scripture-based texts of these works make them eminently useable in non-Orthodox worship contexts and concert programs: examples of this are Chesnokov’s “My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord” (Magnificat), Martynov’s “Beatitudes,” Reeves’ “Lord, Now Lettest Thou Thy Servant” (Nunc dimittis), Sander’s “Virgin Theotokos, Rejoice” (Ave Maria), Toensing’s “Bless the Lord, O My Soul” (Psalm 103/104), and Zakkak’s “Today Is the Beginning of Our Salvation” (Annunciation).
