The New Novello Book of Short & Easy Anthems offers a new and generous selection of works for all occasions and times of year – either for use as introits or communion motets – that require minimal rehearsal time. While a few of the pieces may be well-known there are many new works in this collection, including new and engaging settings of music for the Eucharist and Evensong, such as Rupert Jeffcoat’s Missa Eudora and David Terry’s Preces and Responses. Peter Miller’s beautiful settings of the prayers before communion work equally well as alternatives to the Agnus Dei or as anthems in their own right.
The works include simple unison settings, some with optional descants. Most of the pieces can be performed with a certain amount of flexible scoring. Stephen Burtonwood’s There is a river and David Terry’s Tantum ergo offer beautiful melodies with optional second parts.
In addition to more general anthems, the book endeavours to cover the major feasts of the church year, including Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday and All Saints Day. From the foremost cathedral and school choirs to the smallest church choirs, this volume offers refreshing alternatives to the few stock pieces that choirs often fall back on when rehearsal time is short.
