New Nebraska children’s choir

GRAND ISLAND — Starting this fall, 150 young voices are hoping to wow audiences from Nebraska to New York City.

A new musical group, called the Great Plains Children’s Chorus (GPCC), was started this summer by Centennial High School graduate, David Shack. Shack is currently the director of choirs at Northwest High School in Grand Island.

 

Shack received his music and theatre degree from the University of Nebraska Kearney and his masters in music education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His wife is also a music teacher in Grand Island.

 

Every rehearsal has a community service aspect to it, Shack said. At the first rehearsal, members brought in school supplies to donate to under-priviledged families.

At the second rehearsal, they brought a pair of shoes and at the upcoming third rehearsal, they’ll each bring three cans of food for Project Hunger.

 

In addition to several concerts in the Grand Island area, Shack has also set up an extraordinary opportunity for the students.

They will be performing with American Idol finalists at the CenturyLink Center (formerly the Qwest Center) in Omaha when the finalists come to town as part of the American Idols LIVE! 2011 Tour.
