New Release: The text of “Welcome Yule”, by Zebulon Highben, is a medieval English carol of unknown authorship. The music, while harmonically contemporary, is meant to evoke this medieval English character through its rhythmic structure—notably the pervasive two-against-three feeling—and the predominance of perfect fourths in the melodic line. To that end, “Welcome Yule” should be performed with constant energy and rhythmic vitality, even in the softer sections. Conductors may also wish to explore a brighter range of vowels and tone colors with their choirs.
