SEVERNA PARK, MD — The lyrics to the song “Sanctuary” are
simple, but the group of individuals practicing it Thursday evening
beamed with pleasureas they combined four layers of harmony with
several different rhythms and counter rhythms.
The singers were members of a new choir called LifeSongs, which
meets weekly in Severna Park for the joy and excitement of making
music together.
LifeSongs is the brainchild of Elizabeth Melvin, a musician and
music teacher best known as a performer with Mama Jama and later
with her own band Jambulay.
It all began when fellow band members pointed out that she “had
an ear” for keys and a knack for singing any harmonic part
required, be it alto, soprano, tenor or even bass. After
considering their comments, she began looking for ways to use those
skills to greater advantage.
Consequently, she enrolled in an intensive two-week community
choir leadership training course in Victoria, British Columbia,
Canada.
