I have a book about singing coming out in July called Imperfect Harmony: Finding Happiness Singing With Others (Algonquin Books). It’s part memoir, part the history and science of group singing. I also tried to convey what choral directors do, both from an artistic point of view and from the practical side of running a choral society—Fast Company just published an excerpt which touched on that aspect of the book. AND, I was on NPR recently talking about the effects for group singing with neuroscientist Daniel Levitin.
I’ve been lucky so far and the early reviews have been positive, but this is one of my favorites. Imperfect Harmony is on the July Indie Next List and this is the review that went with it:
“Listening to choral music has always been moving for me, but I never realized the profound emotions felt by the chorus members. In this delightful, charmingly self-effacing memoir, Horn explains how singing with the Choral Society of New York’s Grace Church has been life-affirming, and even life-saving. Drawing on the reflections of other singers, composers of choral music, and scientific evidence, as well as her own experience, Horn beautifully puts into words the joy of singing in harmony with others. Any lover of choral music will love this book!” —Samantha Flynn, Quail Ridge Books & Music, Raleigh, NC
