Music in Panama – University of Southern Maine

The ‘Music In Panama’ course will take place in the Republic of Panama in the Provinces of Panama and Bocas del Toro – Almirante. Students will engage in performance practice appropriate to the music being studied in the Republic of Panama with Panamanian students and will help to develop a Summer Music Camp (Almirante – Bocas del Toro) under the supervision and direction of the instructors. Students will reflect on both the musical and the creative processes as performers as well as listeners (in attendance at local arts events, excursions, or activities). In order to achieve these outcomes, students will perform in concerts and write an assessment of their performance. Additionally, students will attend other musical performances and write an academic critique of the performance that contextualizes the performance in terms of culture, genre, and relevance. Students will be required to attend and participate in seminar class, discussions, and planning meetings. Students that have experience playing instruments or choral singing are strongly encouraged to apply. Students that have experience in TESOL are also encouraged to apply.

A complete application includes all of the following items:

Signed, completed application form*
$200 non-refundable deposit (applied to the program cost)
Typed 200-word essay
A letter of recommendation from a faculty member or academic advisor (recommendation cannot come from the faculty member(s) leading the program)
Official copies of USM transcript
Once your application is processed, the faculty leaders will reach out to you regarding setting up an interview and any other additional steps needed as part of the application process.

All items should be turned in to the Office of International Programs at 101 Payson Smith Hall. The deposit should be paid in cash or check made out to the University of Southern Maine.

Incomplete applications will not be accepted. You will be notified by e-mail of your application status. If your application is not accepted, the nonrefundable deposit will be returned. If the program is canceled for any reason by the USM, all deposits will be returned.

Tuition and Fees

The program is estimated to be between $2,600-$2,900. The cost of three credits of tuition and fees at the in-state rate are in addition to the program fee. The program fee includes accommodation, international airfare, in-country transportation, site visits, field trips, some meals, and emergency medical and evacuation insurance through iNext.

Not included in the program fee: cost of tuition and fees, books, academic supplies, some meals, or other personal expenses. Three credits of undergraduate tuition and regular university fees is $843, and three credits of graduate tuition and regular university fees is $1,224. All participants on USM travel programs receive the in-state tuition rate regardless of residency.

All participants will be automatically registered for a payment plan. The $200 deposit will go towards the cost of the program and the remaining balance will be due as follows:

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Federal financial aid and loans are available to matriculated students who participate in travel courses. In order to receive the benefit of financial aid, students must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credits during the summer for a summer travel course. If financial aid does not cover the full cost of the program, students are responsible for paying the remaining balance according to the payment plan schedule.
