Performance of Michael John Trotta’s “Break of Day”Wins Inaugural Commission Contest
Dr. Brent Wells leads an artistic performance by College of Idaho Chorale that creates a new collaboration.
Virginia Beach, VA: Today, composer Michael John Trotta, Director of Choral Music at Virginia Wesleyan College, announced the winner of the Inaugural Commission Contest. The contest, open to choirs from around the world, was to create a video uploaded to YouTube from the Michael John Trotta choral catalog. The winner of this world-wide contest was the College of Idaho Chorale Under the Direction of Dr. Brent Wells.
The song chosen by Dr. Wells was Trotta’s “Break of Day” for SATB choir and piano. The work, already selected by JW Pepper as an Editor’s Choice selection for the 2013-2014 season has become a favorite in contests, festivals, and concerts around the country. Videos will be judge by a panel of conductors and composers and the winner was selected on the basis of musical performance, choral sound, visual presentation, and overall artistry. The prize for the winning choir is a newly composed work for choir by Trotta to be premiered in the 2014-2015 season.
Trotta created the contest as a way to network composers, conductors, choirs, and audiences with the power of technology. He views music as “a gateway to the present moment, a connection to something greater than ourselves.”
This project is a manifestation of the belief that it is the subtle interplay between author, composer, conductor, singer, and audience that has the power to “slow down time long enough to allow the beauty of life to catch up with you.”
The winning video may be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnbQCPXNFvw, the recording will be included on the publisher’s website www.carlfischer.com and the composer’s websitewww.mjtrotta.com
