The Mississauga Festival Youth Choir proudly celebrated it’s 15 year anniversary at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga by warmly welcoming in our new Artistic Director, Ms. Ana Alvarez.
This past Sunday afternoon, Deborah Bradley officially introduced Ana to our choral community as its new Artistic Director. Ana was appointed following an extensive search by the board of directors.
“I look forward to the coming season when I know Ana will do fabulous things with the MFYC” said Deborah Bradley, Founder and retiring Artistic Director.
Ana Alvarez was born in Cali, Colombia. She began her studies in voice at the Conservatorio Antonio Maria Valencia. In 2001, she moved to Bogota, where she received her Bachelor of the Arts degree in music in Choral Conducting under the supervision of Colombian conductor Alejandro Zuleta.
Ana’s experience with choral scores and conducting began in Colombia where she founded Anita y el Coro Sound and directed the ensemble for two years. During her graduate studies in Canada, she continued to gain experience conducting the University of Victoria Chambers Singers, Prima Choir, and Philomela Women’s Choir, while studying under Dr. Bruce E. Moore and Dr. Gerald King.
Ana Alvarez gained experience in orchestral conducting at The University of Victoria. Under Dr. Gerald King and Janos Sandor, she studied technique and score analysis and was Assistant Conductor of the University of Victoria Wind Symphony. Also, she expanded her knowledge of contemporary music by conducting ensembles as a Teaching Assistant for Christopher Butterfield’s Sonic Lab program.
Currently, she is deepening her knowledge in conducting as a D.M.A. student at the University of Toronto., studying with Dr. Hilary Apfesltadt. Her gifts as a conductor have been widely recognized. In 2012, she was honored with invitations to participate at the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir Symposium and the Transient Glory Symposium with Francisco Nunez in New York City.
MFYC is a registered not-for-profit charitable organization founded in 1997 by Deborah Bradley to answer the community’s need for choral music education opportunities for young people of all ages and backgrounds. The Mississauga Festival Youth Choir is a member of the Mississauga Arts Council, Choirs Ontario and is an affiliate of the City of Mississauga.
