Mark Petersen talks about his work as General Manager of the Portland Symphonic Choir

PORTLAND, OR — Behind every arts organizations are folks who make things happen. For the Portland Symphonic Choir, a lot of the behind the scenes work falls on the shoulders of Mark Petersen, who is the General Manager of the organization. Right now, Petersen is especially busy, preparing the logistics for the choir’s season ending concerts at St. Mary’s Cathedral on May 5th and 6th which will feature works by Leonard Bernstein, William Billings, Eric Whitacre, Libby Larsen, Aaron Copland, and Jeffrey Van. These concerts will be his final ones as the choir’s GM (although he will continue to sing with the choir in its bass section).  So it’s high time to talk with Petersen about his work before he rides into the sunset.

How long have you been the choir’s general manager?

Petersen:  I’ve been doing it since March of 2005. I’ve been stage managing since the time when David Wilson was the conductor of the choir, which was back in the 70s. Overall, I’ve been a member of choir for 39 years.

What do you do in your job as general manager?

Petersen:  The primary responsibility is to make sure that everything that the choir does goes smoothly. Politicians have their advance men, and that’s what this job involves. You have to make sure that the choir has a rehearsal space. You have to make sure that there are break-out rooms so that sections of the choir can rehearse. I can delegate some of these tasks, but it’s my responsibility to make sure that it’s taken care of.
