Saunder Choi’s “Lux Aeterna” is a setting of the traditional Latin text, composed in response to the tragedy of the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing. It is meant as a prayer for both those who died and those who survived. From the Requiem Mass, this piece is dedicated to all the victims of the bombing and was premiered by Berklee College of Music’s Tenuto Singers at the Old South Church.
This piece is best-suited for high school and university choirs and falls well within the reach of most despite the occasional divisi. The accompanying piano allows the sustained vocal parts to float above a structure which maintains constant, forward motion, encouraging singers to reach, and audiences to follow the immediately emotionally-engaging melodies.
