The Lutheran Youth Choir International, an ecumenical summer choral ensemble for all high-school age youth founded in 2005, will hold its upcoming third biennial Festival of American Vocal Music in Germany from July 26 to August 4. Located at Mansfeld Castle, a restored 14th-century castle built on a bluff overlooking Mansfeld, the boyhood town of Martin Luther, the festival will bring 30 American and German youth and adults together to rehearse and perform American sacred choral music. Specifically, the Lutheran Youth Choir will present an original Service of Evening Prayer for Peace composed by its Founding Conductor and the Festival Artistic Director, Philip Spencer, containing quotations about peace by numerous world leaders and authors, past and present, woven together with the traditional liturgical texts. To this, the choir will add seven choral anthems by such American composers as Craig Hella Johnson, Andre Thomas, Mark Hayes, and Carl Schalk. The winning entry of the choir’s 2013-2014 International Choral Composition Contest, “Grace and Providence” by Joshua Hummel, will also be performed. During the festival, the choir will perform six times: at churches in Berlin and Mansfeld; at the Augustinian Cloister in Erfurt; and at the Musikschule of Brandis. The youth and adults will also tour historic sites related to the lives of Bach and Luther. Looking ahead, the Lutheran Youth Choir International is exploring a tour to Puerto Rico and Cuba in Summer 2016. More information will be available soon on the choir’s webpage, www.lutheranyouthchoir.org.
