Liturgical period: Lent
Hello,
I hope you will appreciate a new publication of the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles:
3 Lamentations (for the vespers of the day before the Holy Thursday, Friday and Saturday); duration: 40:00
Composed by Jean Gilles (1668-1705), edited by Françoise Talvard.
For 4 soloists (SATB) [treble, high tenor, tenor and bass], 4-voice choir (SATB) and string orchestra, to which may be added wind instruments (doubling).
These three Lamentations (or Leçons de Ténèbres) were probably composed around 1692, for the Tenebrae office, on a text extracted from the Book of Lamentations of Jeremiah.
These scores subtly combine dramatic passages with purely musical moments, notably the vocalises on the Hebrew letters.
