Jewish community choir sings for the Shir Joy of it

March 14, 2012 by Richard Allen Roe Leave a Comment

WESTBORO, MA — Singing got Karen Rothman into trouble when she was in first grade. She sang as she did her schoolwork, a habit that distracted other students and upset her teacher.

Ms. Rothman is still singing, but now she sings to build community and enjoy Jewish music. Her passion has led her to found a new regional Jewish chorus called Shir Joy Choir, with a home base at the Congregation B’nai Shalom in Westboro.

“The power of hearing people sing together is what connects me spiritually to Judaism more than anything else,” says Ms. Rothman.
