With 10 years of teaching already under her belt, Sonoma State University’s new Director of Choral Activities, Jenny Bent, has plenty of real-life experience to share with the next generation of music teachers.
“I can tell them how to prepare for more practical things,” Bent said, while sipping mint tea at a cafe. “How do you prepare for a choral festival? How do you train the male changing voice? That can be daunting.”
An adjunct professor at SSU since long-time choral director Robert Worth took a sabbatical in 2007, the 36-year-old brunette was chosen last spring to take Worth’s place after serving as his interim replacement for a year.
Her post is a key position in the music department, which has been reinvigorated in the past five years with new hires in the jazz, band, music education and musicology programs.
