Sunday, October 16 at 2 pm, the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir will present the New York premiere of an oratorio it commissioned from Mohammed Fairouz in 2015. “ZABUR” will feature the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, Mimesis Ensemble, soloists Tom Cooley (tenor) and Michael Kelly (baritone) and conductor Eric Stark. The work, with libretto by Najla Said, considers a modern day poet and blogger, David (“Dawoud”) who struggles to compose Psalms texts in the company of his muse Gabriel (“Jibreel”) and members of the community in the midst of a raging battle. With familiar verses from the Psalms for the chorus (in Arabic) and dramatic narrative in English, the hour-long work has been called “gripping,” and “utterly beautiful” in its demonstrated response to violence.
The performance coincides with the worldwide release on the NAXOS label of the Symphonic Choir’s recording of ZABUR, made at the world premiere performance with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in April, 2015.
