NEW YORK – A CHIRK member of the Froncysytlle Male Voice Choir has described how the singers found themselves stranded along with thousands of others in New York last week, as it was battered by the worst storm to hit the city in over 20 years.
The group had been touring the Big Apple with them throughout the last week in August, performing in Times Square and the iconic St Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue.
But just two days before they were due to return home, the news that Hurricane Irene was heading towards the city meant they had no choice but sit tight and wait for it to pass.
Sam Hughes, a second bassist and assistant secretary of the choir, explained: “Everything was closed down as Irene was due to hit on Sunday afternoon – we were stuck there. That’s not to say we didn’t have a good time, we just carried on and there were still some people out and about in it, so it soon picked up after the storm had passed.”
