It’s a song about Northumberland hothead and petulant sword-wielder Harry Hotspur. It has unpitched ostinato patterns too which can be on instruments or voice percussion.
It’s a brilliant song for those starting out on the thrill that is part-singing.
It can be sung as a single line melody with piano accompaniment, or as a three part round. Each of the three verses of the song is quite different to the others, but the harmonic pattern is the same so they can be sung together in the manner of a 3-way partner song (or long round). It’s been performed a couple of times by a massive group of unauditioned mixed 9-13 year olds (broken and unbroken voices all mingling together in whichever octave they were happy with), and a boys’ high school choir.
Here’s the story of the song with a full learning video.
