For Russian choir, getting to Cincinnati took dedication

CINCINNATI — When you’re bringing a children’s choir from Novosibirsk, Siberia, to Cincinnati to participate in the World Choir Games, the logistics are going to be difficult, no matter what. But it gets harder when you also have to figure out how to get visas and pay for the trip. Novosibirsk is the geographic center and third most populous city of Russia.

Vladimir Dik, director of the music school that is home to Russia’s Apelsintshik (“little orange”) choir for girls, planned the trip. (His wife, Svetlana, is choir director.) He estimated it cost $3,000 each for 15 people . He talked about it through an Interkultur translator Friday.

He said Apelsintshik was found a ticket broker in Novosibirsk to book tickets at a discount. Without that, tickets would have been about $12,000 each. There was a catch – he and his choir did not know their flights until the last minute, so they had to be ready to go on a moment’s notice.
