ST LOUIS, MO — From what I’ve read of it, E.L. James’s massively popular mommy-porn “Fifty Shades of Grey” runs in the same ugly vein as the “Twilight” series: Woman as the passive, masochistic victim of a cruel, sadistic creep. (Indeed, it started life as a bit of “Twilight” fanfic.)
But there’s one bit of silver lining here: It’s selling a lot of good music. James’s anti-hero, Christian Grey, listens to the incredible 40-voice motet “Spem in alium” by Thomas Tallis, early in the course of the heroine’s many, many, many humiliations. Fangirls are downloading the Tallis Scholars’ recording of it by the thousands.
