Festival 500 Materials Available

 

Over the past 16 years, we have been privileged to be co-directors of The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposia, an integral, academic component of Festival 500. We invited you to “indulge your musical, creative, and scholarly spirit” and join us for an exciting celebration of singing and song….and you did! Within nine symposia, we have shared 64 invited keynote speakers, 58 cameos performances, and over 500 accepted papers and presentations from approximately 50 countries.

 

Building on our previously-published proceedings (1997-2009), we are delighted to announce the e-publication of the 2011 and 2013 Phenomenon of Singing Proceedings. The full set of proceedings (1997-2013) is now available in e-publication format. Of particular interest is the inclusion of the 2011 and 2013 invited keynote presentations in video format embedded in these e-publications.

This body of work represents a substantial and impressive compilation of some of the world’s finest scholarship and practices related to singing and the voice. We are particularly proud of having this academic legacy captured and now made easily accessible in this online format. We are very grateful to Memorial University of Newfoundland Libraries and Lisa Goddard, Scholarly Communications Librarian, for supporting the e-publication of these nine volumes. We thank also MUN DELTS (Distance Education and Learning Technologies) for their taping and editing of the 2011 and 2013 keynote presentations.

 

The purpose of The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposia has been to gather international expertise and provide a forum for interdisciplinary discourse and performance, the dissemination of research, and the generation of further knowledge relating to the phenomenon of singing. We have supported papers and presentations of diverse formats addressing the phenomenon of singing in focus areas such as artistic, physiological, cultural, sociological, historical, pedagogical, psychological, compositional… and beyond! The breadth and depth of research and performance has been truly outstanding. The nine symposia have provided a unique and inspiring venue for scholars, pedagogues, performers, and students from diverse disciplines to meet and share their valuable insights and life work. Perhaps most importantly, we have all experienced the power of singing and song together in this unique province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

 

As you have probably heard, Festival 500 is evolving in new directions. At this time, the festival is in transition to its next iteration. Festival 500’s website will remain live throughout this process and updates can be found through Facebook, Twitter and email ().
