“Evening Prayers” is Richard Toensing’s latest choral work, scored for mezzo-soprano solo, women’s choir (SSAA), woodwind quartet, and harp. This lush and beautiful setting of part of the Orthodox Liturgy of Great Compline combines ethereal modal harmonies with a melody based largely on Byzantine Tone 6. Beginning quietly and rising in graceful melodic curves to a soaring climax, “Evening Prayers” (ca. 9:00) envelopes the audience in a mood of still, worshipful awe. The original version, written for mezzo-soprano and chamber orchestra, is posted on YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PscJOlOvMJk, and performed by mezzo-soprano Julie Simson and the University of Colorado Chamber Orchestra.
