Composer hits right note for Corbridge church choir

April 3, 2012 by Richard Allen Roe Leave a Comment

By Tom Rowley

CORBRIDGE, UK — HE has been hailed as a hero of choral music and his work normally echoes around such prestigious venues as Oxford’s Sheldonian theatre or Salisbury Cathedral.  Bob Chilcott’s 125 compositions have been sung in dozens of countries from America to Australia.

But the first performance of his latest work will be a rather more modest affair… sung by the amateur choir at St Andrew’s Church in Corbridge.

And rather than selling top-price tickets for a glamorous evening event, they will premiere the piece at a normal Sunday service.

The 20-strong part-time choir of teachers, electricians, designers and estate agents normally face their biggest challenge when villagers pack the church for its Christmas service.
