After 10 years, 70 motets and over 45 hours of music, I am pleased to announce the completion of Tempus per Annum, my cycle of motets for the Church’s year. Setting the Latin Introits for Sundays and major Feasts of the Church’s year, the cycle covers the whole religious year from Advent and Christmas, through Lent and Passiontide, to Ascension, Pentecost and the 33 Sundays of Ordinary Time.
The motets are intended to be of practical use being of a suitable length for liturgical use and with the majority being written for 4 part choir. A number have already been performed and recorded and to encourage performance, particularly in a liturgical context, all 70 motets are available for free download from the CPDL website ( http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Robert_Hugill).
You can hear the four Advent motets, recorded by Paul Brough and the eight:fifteen vocal ensemble, on SoundCloud:
The motets are intended to be of practical use – the majority are written for four part choir, the later motets in the cycle in five or six parts, with the final two, Dignus et Agnus and Gaudeamus omnes, forming a rousing conclusion each in eight parts. Motets from the cycle have been performed both in concert and liturgically by choirs including the Choir of All Saints Church, Margaret Street, the Choir of St John’s Church, Fulham, London Concord Singers, Chapelle du Roi, the Amaryllis Consort, the eight:fifteen vocal ensemble, and Harmonia Sacra. The Advent Motets have been recorded by the eight:fifteen vocal ensemble and Paul Brough on the Divine Art label, whilst Harmonia Sacra and Peter Leech will be recording one of these later this year.
A number of the motets are available in versions for ATBaB, and the Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent and Easter motets are available in English versions which I am happy to send people, just contact me on
