PLANT CITY, FL — Joseph G. Mendolia, a music education major whose studies were interrupted by a 2008 tornado that virtually destroyed his Tennessee campus, had been back in Plant City a short time when he came up with an idea.
Passionate about music, Mendolia, then 20, was seeking a local choral group open to all. Unsuccessful, he tested the waters with a newspaper advertisement. The result: Plant City Community Choir, a coed group with a membership that nearly has quadrupled in recent years as it strives to become a premier local singing group.
“We started in December 2008 with 12 singers, borrowing music from different high schools,” Mendolia said.
