Scott Peterson is hanging out between classes on Friday, his last day as a Yakima Valley Community College music professor, and some of the affection revolves around his departure.
But some of it is just how students always act toward Peterson, who has been director of YVCC’s choral program since 1976. He’s one of those teachers students just like.
“I heard you’re not going to be around next year,” says Bryant Moore, a former music-appreciation student who walks by. “I just wanted to say, your class was awesome.”
It’s a common refrain. And, watching him conduct his final choir class in preparation for Sunday’s retirement concert at The Seasons Performance Hall, it’s easy enough to see why. Peterson, a bespectacled, gray-bearded 59-year-old in navy slacks and a yellow dress shirt, gets excited about this stuff. He makes jokes, he claps his hands, he waves his arms. Of course they like him.
