Chicago Choral Artists’ annual Christmas Candlelight Concert, with music for choir, string quartet, and oboe, will continue the ensemble’s fruitful collaboration with the Kontras Quartet (2017 WFMT Artists-in-Residence). Two performances offer a capella and concerted carols by American composers – including Chicago-area composers Trevor Patrick Watkin, Paul Bouman, and Carl
Schalk. Modern choral masterpieces such as Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium, Alan Hovhaness’ A Rose Tree Blossoms, Stephen Caracciolo’s There is No Rose of Such Virtue, and Randall Thompson’s Alleluia are programmed alongside crowd-pleasing arrangements of The Christmas Song, Lo, How a Rose, Away in a Manger, and I Saw Three Ships. This concert is an ideal way for audiences of all ages to contemplate and celebrate the season.
The 32-voice professional choir is joined by the Kontras Quartet (Dmitri Pogorelov and Francois Henkins, violins; Ben Weber, viola, Jean Hatmaker, cello) with guest artist Christine Janzow Phillips, oboe. Michael D. Costello, of the revered Bach Cantata Vespers series at Grace Lutheran Church in
River Forest, is now in his fourth season as Artistic Director of Chicago Choral Artists.
Tickets in advance or at the door: $25/Adult, $20/Senior, $10/Student
