Canadian Chamber Choir Releases New Album: ‘Sacred Reflections of Canada’

November 21, 2015 by Corey Ticknor Leave a Comment

The Canadian Chamber Choir, a 20-voice choir of professional singers from across Canada, is pleased to present a brand new album of Canadian-composed works entitled ‘Sacred Reflections of Canada – A Canadian Mass’. This new recording gathers 19 pieces from 17 Canadian composers and weaves them into a composite mass, featuring pieces based on the five traditional mass movements (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei) which are then interspersed with other works that paint a soundscape of spiritual introspection.

Under the artistic direction of Chicago-based choral conductor and music educator Julia Davids, the CCC has spent the past 15 years performing and giving choral workshops in nearly every corner of Canada. Their mandate is simple: to build community through choral singing. This means engaging with as many youth, community, and church singers as possible on each tour – but it also means working to nurture and build the community of Canadian composers who often find it difficult to have their works shared with a wider audience. The CCC has dedicated itself to being an artistic partner with many of the phenomenal composers who call Canada home.

Following up on the CCC’s 2010 release ‘In Good Company‘, the new collection of tracks on ‘Sacred Reflections of Canada‘ feature pieces by established composers such as Barry Cabena, Sid Robinovitch, and Nancy Telfer as well as works by up-and-coming artists like Kathleen Allan, Matthew Emery, and CCC composer-in-residence Jeff Enns.

From the sweetly ethereal mother’s prayer of Don Macdonald‘s ‘Tabula Rasa’ to the sparkling rhythms and sweeping crescendi of Tobin Stokes‘ ‘Gloria!‘, ‘Sacred Reflections of Canada‘ takes the listener on a cross-Canada musical journey, visiting newly discovered musical vistas which will undoubtedly become well-loved standards of the choral canon.
