Bath Choral Society has announced the appointment of Will Dawes as its new musical director from September, following the retirement of Matthew Bale in July.
Based in Oxford, Will Dawes graduated with a degree in choral conducting from the Royal Academy of Music in 2006, being awarded the Thomas Armstrong Prize for choral direction.
He currently directs Henley Choral Society and also has a career as a professional singer with the early music group Stile Antico.
“At his audition, Will struck an immediate rapport with the choir,” said Patricia Dunlop, chairman of the society.
“His approach was direct and warm and he challenged us to sing better than any other candidate.
“We felt challenged by his obvious musical intelligence.
“There was no doubt we could work together.
“We look forward to introducing him to our audiences and we hope that you will come to hear Bath Choral Society perform under his baton next year.”
Will’s musical career started as a chorister at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, and as a member of the Berkshire Young Musicians Trust. He studied music at the University of Edinburgh and then Choral Conducting and Voice at the Royal Academy of Music under the direction of Patrick Russill, Paul Brough and David Lowe. Like so many talented musicians, he leads a life that is both energetic and demanding.
