It was minutes before Sonlight Youth Choir & Band was set to perform at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Sunday night, and D.J. Head Jr. put his head in his hands. “You know how emotional I am,” he said to the kids.
They told him to face away, and they all shot up and put on suspenders, just like the ones he’s worn for the last 12 years.
“Wow,” he said. And then he stood silent, before calling the kids to line up for the show.
Head will be stepping down as the choir’s leader after the group’s summer tour, and he leaves behind a legacy of music and laughter to kids from all over Alachua County. Unlike other youth choirs, his singers perform works from artists ranging from the Goo Goo Dolls to the Dixie Chicks. He says it’s so the youth can connect with “realness of life.”
