KNOXVILLE, TN — Trying to recapture high school glory is a foolish pursuit in most circumstances. But it seems to be paying off for alumni of two of South Knoxville’s now-defunct high schools, judging by the sounds coming from a church basement.
Former members of the choirs directed by Harold Mays at South and South-Young high schools are dusting off classics from their younger days as they prepare for a concert scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at South-Doyle Middle School (formerly South-Young High School). It’s a reunion of friends and strangers, all coming together to honor Mays.
“What we’re doing here is totally my dream,” says Belinda Carter Hammond, South High Class of ’73. “It has been for a number of years.”
