Young international vocal talents compete at the 6th International A CAPPELLA Contest Leipzig 2012
The groups admitted to the 6th International A CAPPELLA Contest Leipzig 2012 are chosen. Out of several talented groups, eight could convince the jurors and were admitted to participate in the contest, which is staged within the esteemed meeting of the a cappella-scene in Leipzig, the Festival of Vocal Music a cappella. From 27th to 29th April, the young vocal talents will compete for the Leipzig A CAPPELLA AWARD, prices of € 4.000 alltogether as well as performances in the famous Gewandhaus and 2013´s festival. Furthermore all contestants may take part in a singing workshop with Stephen Connolly for free.
The A CAPPELLA contest will be staged on 27th and 28th April 2012 in the Mendelsohn Hall (Gewandhaus Leipzig).
On Friday, 27th April, four groups will perform from 1.00 pm on: Jazzva (Ljubljana, Slovenia), BMV Cabrio (Terni, Italy), Ensemble Norma (Helsinki, Finland) and Ginger & Tonic (Melbourne, Austalia).
The four ensembles singing without amplification will present themselves on Saturday, 28th April, 11.00 am: AcaBella (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Ensemble quartonal (Bremen, Germany), KrisKrosKvintet (Prague, Czech Republic) and Latvian Voices (Riga, Latvia).
The eight chosen a cappella-groups represent eight different countries – with Italy and Australia being represented for the first time at the contest! They also sing different styles: classical and romantic music, folk music, jazz, soul, pop and rock as well as original compositions will sound in the Mendelssohn Hall.
The contest is open to the public. Entrance is free.
The winning ensemble will be awarded the Leipzig A CAPPELLA AWARD 2012. The jurors will also present the three winners with trophy money of a total € 4.000. Simon Carrington, former King´s Singer and professor of choral conducting at Yale University will be president of the judging panel. He and Katarina Henryson, alto of the Swedish Ensemble The Real Group, Martin Hoffmeister, head of the music programme at MDR FIGARO radio station, and Wolfram Lattke as member of the hosting vocal group amarcord, will decide on the awardees. The audience also got its vote. The contestant attracting their favour will receive the Audience Award.
The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, 28th April within the festival-concert of CADENCE at Schaubühne Lindenfels, starting at 8.00 pm. On Sunday, 29th April, this year’s award winning ensemble will perform at the final concert of the 13th International Festival of Vocal Music a cappella in the Great Hall of the Gewandhaus. Furthermore it will be invited to give a concert within 2013´s festival.
All contestants are invited to participate in the A CAPPELLA Workshop with Stephen Connolly. On April 29th, the former King´s Singer will work with the young ensembles to support their further musical development. The course is free to all competitors and open to the public (ticket: € 6). It will start 10.30 am in the Alte Handelsbörse Leipzig.
