The post-modern pirate faces a very different set of challenges than did his colleagues in the days of yore. No more do they set sail for distant shores—pirating is largely accomplished on the internet these days, and ships of oak have given way to digital havens.
The sea shantey has also had a few changes, as this new tune from Daniel E. Gawthrop will illustrate. Turn your men’s chorus loose on A Pirate’s Life and they’ll find the verses consist mostly of easily singable unison and two-part passages. Only the chorus calls for four-part harmony.
Feel free to make use of simple props and costumes, add choreography as desired, and play it for laughs!
