ChoralEd: Vocal Exercises – Posture, Breath, and Relaxation

November 30, 2022 by Micah Bland Leave a Comment

In ChoralEd Episode 12 and 13, Dr. Roger Hale and Angelica Brooks discuss vocal exercises for posture, breathing, and relaxation.  In Episode 12, Dr. Hale describes the anatomical features of our posture and breath.  This technical discussion is accompanied by exercises that improve student awareness of the head, neck, spine, body, and breath. In Episode 13, Angelica Brooks shares her expertise of vocal exercises for relaxation.  In her ensembles, Mrs. Brooks incorporates yoga for the relaxation of the body and improvement of student focus.  For the relaxation of the lips, tongue, and jaw, Mrs. Brooks suggests lip trills and an exercise she calls Werther’s Original (named after the candy).  In addition, Mrs. Brooks incorporates kinesthetic movement in an effort to transfer focus away from tension in the voice.
