K-12 Choral Conducting: ACDA Publications and Resources

August 1, 2022 by Amanda Bumgarner Leave a Comment

The August 2022 issue of Choral Journal is online and features an overview of publications and resources related to K-12 choral conducting. You can read it in its entirety at acda.org/choraljournal. Following is a summary of this section.

Those who conduct elementary, middle, and high school choirs have a special calling. From trying to start a new choir, attempting to fi nd repertoire suitable for an ensemble with a wealth of sopranos and a lone bass, to dealing with overlapping athletic and performance schedules and an administration that in some cases just doesn’t seem to “get” it, those leading K-12 ensembles are constantly faced with unique and challenging situations. And yet, it is in these classrooms that younger singers are awakened, and a love of music is inspired that will stay with them throughout their lives. The start of the 2022-23 school year offers an invitation to provide an overview of resources that are directly related to K-12 teaching and conducting, highlighting material from National ACDA webinars and publications from the last decade and specifically the last several years. We hope this serves you as you open up the classroom doors once again.

First, you will find a list of K-12 Choral Journal focus issues, with the title and author of each article included. You can read and download all of these articles at acda.org/choraljournal. Log onto the website with your information, and there is a dropdown menu on the right sidebar to “Search the Archives”; simply click on the issue month and year you would like to read.

Next, we are including a one-page reprint of the articles and resources published in ChorTeach in the 2022 winter and spring issues. ChorTeach is ACDA’s practical teaching publication, published online quarterly, available at acda.org/chorteach. Submit articles, requests for topics, or new resources to .

Finally, this overview section contains an excerpt from National ACDA Webinars on the topics of Advocacy, Elementary Choir, and Middle School/High School Choir. Find the full video replays here.
