From Brahms to Prauliņš

June 26, 2019 by ACDA Leave a Comment

Host Stan Schmidt takes you back this week to May 12, 2013, and introduces a program on ACDA Radio and ChoralNet that could prove very interesting from the educational and listening corner. You will enjoy music by Uģis Prauliņš, Roxanna Panufnik; Patricia Van Ness, and selections from well-known friends like John Ireland, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Johannes Brahms.

Along with a popular Ave Maria and the famous Zigeunerlieder of Brahms, you can hear the first four movements from “The Nightingale” by Uģis Prauliņš performed by the Danish National Vocal Ensemble led by Stephen Layton.

From Latvia we go across the border and hear the Chorus of the Moscow Academy of Choral Art with music by Rimsky-Korsakov entitled “Poem about Aleksey, the Man of God.” Then British composer Roxanna Panufnik’s composition with its distinguished sound called “Love Endureth.” We lighten up with John Ireland’s “Spring, the Sweet Spring.” Then a beautiful “Kyrie” from a Requiem by Patricia Van Ness offered by the voices of Coro Allegro.

Before we hear the familiar Zigeunerlieder by Brahms, we take a listen to something very different. It is a “Magnificat” and “Nunc Dimittis” sung by the Maida Vale Singers with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia using two melodies from Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances and a Nocturne from his String Quartet No. 2. It is familiar music to a familiar text  arranged and orchestrated by British composer Robin White. I hope this program from 2013 fits the bill.
