From Fancie to Fancies

June 12, 2019 by ACDA Leave a Comment

This week on Going Beyond Words and ACDA Radio on ChoralNet you will hear four fantastic ensembles presenting music from the Renaissance to our present time. On the table are folk songs and love songs, plus melodies about flowing tears and crows and clusters.

First you will enjoy selections from one of the first CDs created by Dale Warland and his singers, called “Fancie,” from 1994. They feature composers including William Hawley, Ned Rorem, Norman Dello Joio, Rossini, and George Shearing. Next is the Renaissance group La Rȇveuse with four Ayres by English composer Henry Lawes.

We will hear the voice of tenor Jeffrey Thompson with three other artists supporting his efforts on period instruments. Then Bo Holten leads the Danish National Vocal Ensemble with four wonderful Danish folk songs about the season from a CD titled “Årstinderne 28 Danske Sange.” Finally, the rest of this broadcast gets locked in as John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers help us all recall Rutter’s cycle called “Fancies.” It was written in 1971 for the Richard Hickox Singers and Orchestra, later renamed the City of London Sinfonia.

All in all it is a very enjoyable listening engagement as you move into summer musical activities.
